The field of private professional healthcare advocacy is exploding in response to an increasingly complex, fragmented and expensive U.S. healthcare system. Our lineup of nationally recognized speakers will break things down as they cover a wide range of topics including: patient rights and safety, dealing with difficult patients, the power of “story” as a mediation tool, healthcare reform updates and more.

Trisha Torrey
The Future of Advocacy is Now
Ms. Torrey is an author, speaker, Founder and Director of The Alliance of Professional Health Advocates and AdvoConnection.com. She also serves as a member of the Patient Advocate Certification Board. She has written six books. Two of her books, the You Bet Your Life! series, help patients and caregivers understand how to navigate the healthcare system. Her other books, the Health Advocates Career Series, support the business needs of private, independent patient advocates. Trisha is a passionate supporter of patients’ rights. She believes with all her heart that healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
Lynne Franklin
Tough Talk: When Decisions Have To Be Made Now
Ms. Franklin is a national speaker and consultant on persuasive communication messages and strategies. She is an esteemed lecturer and consultant focusing on effective methods to engage those who struggle with decision-making. In the context of patient advocacy, becoming a “doctor of persuasion” is critical, especially when vital decisions are on the line. Franklin will discuss the neuroscience behind what it means to “lose your mind” – especially in the face of medical uncertainty. Her lecture will provide tools for advocates, physicians, nurses, patients and family members to help “get their minds back” so they can make effective decisions.
Rick Tivers, LCSW, CGP
Don’t Overlook Personality Disorders: Identifying The Signs and Signals Now
Rick Tivers is known as a therapist’s therapist. He’s been leading therapy groups for three decades with the aim of allowing everyone to be “seen and understood.” Through his work with patients, advocates, social workers and therapists, Rick has developed keen insight into the difficulties that confront healthcare professionals when actual physical ailments overlap with bona fide personality disorders. Rick will use his interactive and engaging style to help attendees identify the signs and signals that are often overlooked by health professionals when treating and assisting patients with mental illnesses ranging from mild depression to severe borderline personality disorder. He’ll help us understand the mindset of these clients, allowing us to communicate effectively to achieve desired goals.
Karen Curtiss
Must-Have Checklists, Tools and Tips: Help Save Lives Now
Karen Curtiss is the author of “Safe & Sound in the Hospital: Must-Have Checklists and Tools for Your Loved One’s Care.” She’s also president of PartnerHealth, LLC and Founder of CampaignZERO. Karen educates her audience, providing tools to fill the cracks in our hospital system. “Never Events” (events that should never happen to any patient in any hospital) occur over 13 million times a year yet this crisis is largely hidden from consumers. Karen is adamant that preventing “Never Events” and other hospital hazards is not rocket science, especially if you know what to look for. Her presentation will help attendees identify, confront and speak up to prevent a hazard, even during seemingly routine medical procedures.
Stephanie Johnson
